A Muslim convert accused of recruiting children to Al Shabaab was expelled from Maseno University in February 2012 after stabbing a fellow student, a witness told a court Monday.
The witness said the suspect was never arrested, although a report was made at Maseno Police Station.
Samuel Wanjala Wabwile, who took the name Salim Muhamud Wabwile after converting to Islam, is charged in a Mombasa court with belonging to Al Shabaab and recruiting children under his care at Gandani Gotani Primary School in Kaloleni, Kilifi, where he taught islamic studies.
He denies the charges and has no lawyer. He has been denied bail. Monday, a security officer at his former university said Wanjala alias Salim, who was also an imam at Majid Jihad, fled after stabbing fellow student Maurice Irungu Mwangi on February 22, 2012 with a kitchen knife outside the institution.
Last week, six pupils claimed he taught them martial arts and urged them to shun and kill non-Muslims. Parents alleged he converted their Christian children to radical Islam. While testifying Monday before Mombasa Principal Magistrate Diana Mochache,
Maseno University Chief Security Officer Willis Wandai Joseph said Wanjala called his friend, Patrick Kanyi, telling him that he had gone to join the Al Shabaab.
