Suspected Al-Shabaab gunmen kidnap teacher in Kenya’s Dabaab

The new Ifo II camp was built to try and ease the severe overcrowding in Dadaab, where camps designed for 90,000 people now shelter over 380,000. Yet despite the influx of new arrivals, Ifo II remains empty as the Government of Kenya has refused to allow people to move in. Water systems, latrines and healthcare facilities are ready to use but are standing idle. Another planned extension known as Ifo III has also stalled.

Suspected members of Somalia-based Islamist group Al-Shabaab on Monday kidnapped a Kenyan teacher near a refugee camp in Kenya’s northeastern town of Dadaab, police have said.

The teacher working with Windle Trust, an NGO, was identified as Judy Mutua. Her whereabouts is still unknown.

She was kidnapped near the Hagadera refugee camp by four unknown gunmen, said Dadaab divisional police commander, Raphael Kimilu.

The gunmen were said to have shot at an NGO car that Mutua was traveling in. They then ordered the driver to stop and took over the car.

They drove the car “a few kilometers away from the camp” before getting off and taking the teacher toward the Somali border, according to Kimilu.

The fate of the driver is also unknown.

Mutua was among those sent to the restive region to invigilate the national examinations which kicked off on Monday.

Police have launched a manhunt.
