A South Australian woman charged with being a member of Islamic State has been on the radar of counter-terrorism police for more than 10 months after being stopped trying to leave the country.
The 22-year-old Australian citizen arrived in Australia from Somalia when she was 14 and now has citizenship.
A woman from South Australia has been charged with allegedly pledging her allegiance to the Islamic State terrorist group.
She was arrested in Adelaide on Tuesday after an operation run by the South Australian Joint Counter Terrorism Team.
Handcuffed and wearing a hijab, she made no application for bail in Adelaide Magistrates Court. Her identity was suppressed until another appearance in August.
Police allege the young Muslim woman cultivated relationships with Islamic State members online and pledged her allegiance to the terrorist organisation.
Most of her alleged activities were online, said Ian McCartney, AFP Assistant Commissioner for Counter Terrorism.
She was allegedly engaging online with what Mr McCartney described as “counter-terrorism suspects”.
In July 2016, the woman tried to travel out of the country, but was stopped by authorities.
